Studies reveal that saffron decreased the severity of mild-to-moderate postpartum depression in breastfeeding mothers.

This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial involved 60 new mothers with postpartum depression who were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or 30mg of saffron per day.

Results showed that saffron reduced the severity of mild-to-moderate depression with no significant adverse effects on breastfeeding mothers. Moreover, saffron demonstrated higher response and remission rates compared to the placebo, suggesting saffron is a safe alternative treatment that effectively alleviates postpartum depression symptoms.

Another clinical trial examined mothers with PPD who were randomized to receive either saffron capsules (30mg/day) or fluoxetine (40mg/day) over six weeks. The findings supported saffron as a safe and effective alternative for improving depressive symptoms in postpartum depression.
