One of the most common questions we get is, “Is saffron safe while pregnant?” While there is not a simple answer to this question, here is what we typically advise:
We do not recommend saffron during your first two trimesters of pregnancy, until 37 weeks gestation. At 37 weeks, saffron is safe to consume and has many benefits, including aiding in easier childbirth, reducing the cesarean rate, and supporting mood.
Why Saffron Should Be Avoided in the First Two Trimesters
Saffron is a powerful spice that has been revered for its medicinal properties for centuries. However, during the early stages of pregnancy, there is a concern that saffron may stimulate uterine contractions, potentially increasing the risk of miscarriage.
For this reason, it’s typically recommended to avoid saffron during the first and second trimesters (up until about 36 weeks).
While there is limited research on the exact risks during pregnancy, the general recommendation is to err on the side of caution and limit saffron intake early on. Some traditional practices and anecdotal evidence suggest that saffron, when consumed in large amounts, can act as an abortifacient, although these claims have not been conclusively supported by modern studies.
The Benefits of Saffron After 37 Weeks of Pregnancy
Once you have reached your 37th week of pregnancy, saffron can offer several notable benefits that may help in preparing your body for labor and delivery.
Our founder, Nikki Bostwick, used saffron for fertility support and at 37 weeks to prepare for birth. Here are some of the benefits she noticed:
1. Aiding in Easier Childbirth
Research has suggested that saffron may play a role in facilitating an easier childbirth.
Some studies have indicated that saffron can help tone and prepare the uterus for labor.
It’s believed to have mild uterine-stimulating effects, which may assist in initiating labor and making contractions more effective. As your body approaches the final stages of pregnancy, saffron can provide support by ensuring that your uterine muscles are in optimal condition for a smooth and efficient delivery.
Additionally, some studies have proposed that saffron's anti-inflammatory properties may reduce the discomfort associated with labor by minimizing swelling and promoting better circulation.
2. Reducing Cesarean Section Rate
Saffron's potential benefits extend to reducing the likelihood of a cesarean section (C-section) delivery.
Some studies have pointed to the role of saffron in reducing the need for surgical intervention during childbirth. This effect is thought to be related to its ability to improve uterine tone and promote more regular contractions, making the labor process smoother and potentially reducing the need for a C-section.
While not all pregnancies will benefit from this, for some women, saffron may contribute to a more favorable environment for vaginal birth.
3. Supporting Mood & Emotional Health
Pregnancy can bring about fluctuating hormones, which in turn can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and even depression. Fortunately, saffron has mood-enhancing properties that can help alleviate some of these emotional challenges.
The spice has been shown in studies to have antidepressant effects, which may be beneficial during the later stages of pregnancy when mood swings are common.
Additionally, saffron may help reduce stress and promote relaxation. The hormonal changes in late pregnancy often contribute to a heightened state of anxiety or stress, and saffron’s calming properties may offer relief, helping you feel more relaxed and balanced.
How to Safely Consume Saffron During Pregnancy
If you decide to incorporate saffron into your diet after reaching 37 weeks of pregnancy, it's important to do so in moderation. Excessive amounts of saffron can have potential risks, so it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider before adding saffron to your pregnancy routine.
A safe daily dosage at 37 weeks can range from 30mg-150mg of saffron. We suggest not exceeding 900mg (which is 6 saffron lattes). Our Warm Feelings® saffron latte and Kinder Thoughts® saffron capsules provides a therapeutic, bioavailable dose of saffron making it an ideal choice for the final weeks before labor. Let the soothing, mood-enhancing properties of saffron support you as you prepare to bring new life into the world!
