It’s been almost a year since I’ve started kicking off my days not with a big hearty breakfast, but rather a simple, collagen-filled butter coffee. It fuels my brain, kickstarts digestion and supports healthy hormones. I also have more energy and better focus.

Butter coffee isn’t just another wellness fad, but a scientifically proven formula that fuels your body and brain, and keeps you satiated and focused for hours. It was created by David Asprey and inspired by tsampa, an energizing yak butter and black tea mixture traditionally drank by Tibetan monks to fuel long meditations.

I make this satisfying and functional take on butter coffee with grass-fed ghee, collagen, ashwagandha and cacao (who said you can’t have chocolate for breakfast?!). I drink it first thing in the morning, then head to a workout or use the next couple of hours to get productive. I usually don’t want to eat for two or three hours after my butter coffee.

Besides incredible flavor, adding cacao to your morning cup of coffee has the following benefits:

Cacao contains anandamide, otherwise known as the bliss molecule, which raises serotonin levels and creates a feeling of euphoria.

Cacao can balance hormonal mood swings.

Cacao is an incredible source of antioxidants and vitamins, as well as magnesium, iron, chromium, vanadium, copper, zinc and phosphorus.

Cacao has more calcium than cow’s milk and is the highest plant-based source of iron.

Cacao is known to help with heart health and weight loss.

2 cups Fresh Brewed Hot Coffee

1 tablespoon Grass-Fed Ghee (I love Fourth & Heart unsalted ghee)

1 tablespoon Cacao Powder, raw

1 teaspoon MCT Oil

1 teaspoon Honey or Maple Syrup

1 teaspoon Ashwagandha

½ teaspoon Maca

½ teaspoon Cinnamon

3 shakes of Cayenne Pepper

Dash of Sea Salt

*Option to make it more creamy: Add ⅓ cup Cashew Milk, 1 tablespoon Coconut Butter or 1 tablespoon Coconut Cream.

Blend all of the ingredients on high speed until frothy, and serve with love.

**Makes 1 serving.
