A Pop of Spirulina Popcorn

Spirulina Popcorn is the underground snack of choice within the health food community. It’s quick, green, clean, communal, and let’s get real– it’s been dinner more times than I can count. What’s great is you don’t even have to look at it while eating. You can watch a movie or read a book or have a conversation with someone while stuffing your face and never once break eye contact.

It can sometimes seem like food is a peripheral experience, but it’s oftentimes a stepping-stone to community, discussion, and openness. We eat food when we celebrate, when we mourn, and when we savor– it’s a critical part of our short time on this floating rock we call Mother Earth. Maybe herein lies the answer to our greatest world conflicts and misunderstandings? Maybe we all just need to pull up a chair around the biggest bowl of popcorn we can make and start there– start by simply sharing something with each other.

| INGREDIENTS |

POPCORN:

¼ cup Heirloom Popcorn

1 ½ tablespoons Ghee or Coconut Oil

TOPPING:

Butter or Coconut Oil, melted

SPICE MIXTURE:

2 tablespoons Nutritional Yeast

1 teaspoon Onion Powder

1/2 teaspoon Spirulina

1/4 teaspoon Turmeric

1/8 teaspoon Paprika

Salt

Popcorn 2

1 | In a pot, melt the ghee or coconut oil on medium-high heat.

2 | Add in four kernels of popcorn and put the lid on the pot. Wait until you hear the four kernels pop and add the rest of the popcorn in. Quickly cover the lid and consistently shake the pot in order to get all of the seeds popped and avoid burning. Once you hear that the seeds have stopped popping, toss into a large bowl.

3 | Toss the popcorn with melted butter or coconut oil to your liking.

4 | In a small bowl, prepare the spice mixture.

5 | Toss the desired amount of seasoning over the popcorn. Some like it more potent, some like it more tamed. If you have seasoning left over, store it in a small glass jar and use it on your next batch!
