When you live in LA, a seemingly normal girls’ night of sunsets and chardonnay can quickly get weird. No, not that kind of weird. We’re talking health foodie weird. This was exactly what happened a few weeks ago when a group of us got together.

“Have you had a collagen latte?”

“A collagen latte! It tastes amazing- just like it’s made with milk. It’s like a face lift in your coffee!”

Obviously, I had to look into this.

What is collagen?

Collagen is the structural protein found in animal connective tissue. When boiled it turns to gelatin. Yes- the same stuff that makes jello and botox. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It holds the whole body together and can be found in the bones, muscles, skin, and tendons. It is vital in maintaining skin, joint, and bone health. As we age, our collagen naturally declines. The modern diet doesn’t include much collagen because we’ve mostly eliminated bones from our diets (bone broths have only recently made a comeback) and it’s pretty important. Nescafe has even made a collagen creamer/sweetener combo that is being sold in Asian markets. Hmmmm…well I had to look into buying some and at least use my boyfriend as a guinea pig. A few companies now produce grass-fed and pasture-raised collagen (much different than what is found in the nether regions of your mom’s pantry. This company Vital Proteins seems to have one of the highest quality sources available.

For those of us who are vegetarian-inclined the idea of collagen is probably pretty off-putting.

To be honest, I have not indulged in a full cup for that reason, but I have tasted it. If you’re feeling adventurous, or have no issues with animal products, I must admit it is amazing- packed full of protein and super good for your skin food.

Not only does it look like the most deliciously frothy latte you’ve ever had, but it also tastes creamy too- though as of now, it won’t be a part of my morning routine.

  • 1-12 oz cup of organic brewed coffee
  • 1 tablespoon of collagen protein

Blend in the blender of your choice until mixture is frothy and creamy.

*The liquid expands from 12 oz to approx. 14-16oz.
